Background

The National Film Awards were instituted in 1954, initially as the State Awards for Films, to recognise artistic, technical and social excellence in Indian cinema. They are administered under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting through the National Film Development Corporation.

The 72nd edition considered feature films, non-feature films and writings on cinema that received certification from the Central Board of Film Certification between 1 January and 31 December 2024.

The Feature Film Jury was chaired by filmmaker Jayaraj, the Non-Feature Film Jury by Aseem Sinha, and the Best Writing on Cinema Jury by A. Chandrasekhar. Awards are presented as Swarna Kamal and Rajat Kamal, along with certificates and specified cash prizes.

Mammootty’s recognition for *Bramayugam* marked his fourth National Film Award for Best Actor. His earlier wins were associated with *Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha* and *Mathilukal*; *Ponthan Mada* and *Vidheyan*; and *Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar*.
