Rotation of Earth and Its Effects
Earth is never still. One of its most important motions is rotation — the spinning of Earth around its own imaginary axis. Rotation explains day and night, the apparent daily movement of the Sun and stars, differences in local time, the Coriolis effect, and part of Earth’s equatorial bulge.
This post develops the idea from the simplest level: What rotates? In which direction? How fast? Why do we not feel it? How does rotation create day and night? Why are winds and ocean currents deflected?
Master Chain: Earth rotates west → east → day–night cycle + apparent east → west motion of sky + longitude-based time difference + Coriolis deflection + rotational bulge
1. What is Rotation?
Rotation means the spinning of a body around its own axis. Earth rotates around an imaginary line called the Earth’s axis, which passes through the North Pole, the centre of Earth and the South Pole.
Rotation
Earth spins on its own axis.
Approximate everyday period: 24 hours.
Revolution
Earth moves around the Sun.
Approximate period: 365¼ days.
Do not mix them: Rotation mainly explains the daily cycle; revolution together with axial tilt explains the annual seasonal cycle. Seasons are not caused by rotation.
2. In Which Direction Does Earth Rotate?
Earth rotates from west to east.
East → West = apparent daily movement of Sun, Moon and stars
Because we are standing on the rotating Earth, the sky appears to move in the opposite direction. Therefore, the Sun appears to rise in the east and set in the west.
Viewed from above North Pole
Earth’s rotation appears counter-clockwise.
Viewed from above South Pole
The same rotation appears clockwise.
3. How Long Does One Rotation Take?
This is where many students get confused, because there are two useful meanings of a “day”.
Sidereal Day
Time Earth takes to rotate 360° relative to distant stars.
Mean Solar Day
Average time from one local solar noon to the next local solar noon.
Why is the solar day about 4 minutes longer?
While Earth is rotating, it is also moving forward in its orbit around the Sun. After Earth completes one 360° spin relative to the stars, it has moved a little along its orbit. It must rotate a little extra before the Sun again reaches the same local meridian. That extra rotation takes roughly four minutes.
Sun returns to same meridian → Mean Solar Day
UPSC Trap: “Earth rotates once in exactly 24 hours” is an everyday approximation. Relative to distant stars, one rotation is about 23 h 56 min 4 s.
4. Angular Speed and Linear Speed: Why They Are Different
Every point on Earth completes one full turn in approximately the same time, but different latitudes travel different distances during that turn.
A. Angular Speed
For geography and longitude-time calculations, Earth completes about 360° in 24 hours.
For the more precise sidereal rotation relative to stars, the angular rate is slightly greater than 15° per hour. The 15°/hour rule is the standard geography shortcut based on a 24-hour mean solar day.
B. Linear Speed
Linear speed means the actual distance a point on Earth’s surface travels per hour.
Towards poles: latitude circles become smaller → linear speed decreases
At geographic poles: radius of rotational circle = 0 → linear speed = 0
Equator
45° latitude
60° latitude
Geographic Pole
Crucial distinction: At the poles, linear speed is zero because the pole does not travel around a circle. But the Earth is still rotating, so the angular motion of the Earth as a whole continues.
5. How Does Rotation Cause Day and Night?
At any moment, the Sun illuminates roughly one half of Earth while the opposite half is in darkness.
As Earth rotates west to east, a location moves from the dark side into sunlight and later from the illuminated side back into darkness. This produces the daily cycle of sunrise, noon, sunset and night.
The boundary separating the illuminated half from the dark half is called the circle of illumination. Its relationship with axial tilt and seasons will be studied in the next post.
6. Why Does the Sun Appear to Move from East to West?
Imagine sitting in a train moving forward. A stationary tree outside appears to move backward. The tree is not really moving backward; the apparent motion is created by your own movement.
Earth works in a similar way:
↓
Sun, Moon and stars appear to move east → west
This is called apparent diurnal motion — the apparent daily movement of celestial objects across the sky due mainly to Earth’s rotation.
7. Rotation and Longitude-Based Time Difference
Because Earth rotates from west to east, places located farther east turn toward the Sun earlier than places farther west. Therefore, their local solar time is ahead.
The complete numerical method for longitude, local time, IST, UTC and the International Date Line has already been covered in the earlier posts. Here the important idea is simply:
No repetition rule: For detailed calculations, revise the earlier posts on Longitude & IST, Time Zones & IDL, and the PYQ Master Practice.
8. Coriolis Effect: The Most Important Dynamic Effect of Rotation
The Coriolis effect is the apparent sideways deflection of a moving object when its motion is observed from a rotating Earth.
Southern Hemisphere → deflection to the LEFT
Why does this happen? Easy example
Think of throwing a ball across a rotating merry-go-round. To a person standing outside, the ball moves along its normal path. But to people rotating with the platform, the path appears curved. Earth is also a rotating platform. Long-distance moving air, ocean water, aircraft and projectiles therefore appear deflected relative to Earth’s surface.
Where is Coriolis strongest?
At Equator
Zero horizontal Coriolis deflection in the standard geographic treatment.
Mid-Latitudes
Deflection becomes progressively stronger with increasing latitude.
At Poles
Maximum for the horizontal Coriolis effect.
What does Coriolis affect?
Planetary winds — trade winds, westerlies and polar easterlies are deflected from a simple north–south path.
Cyclones and anticyclones — rotation direction differs between hemispheres.
Ocean currents — surface-current paths and large gyres are strongly influenced.
Long-range projectiles and aircraft/navigation — high-precision trajectories must account for Earth’s rotation.
Very important: Coriolis does not create wind. Pressure differences set air in motion; the Coriolis effect modifies its direction. Similarly, it does not create ocean water — it deflects moving water.
Cyclone trap: Tropical cyclones normally do not form right at the Equator because Coriolis force is too weak there; a commonly used operational rule is that formation is generally absent within roughly 5° latitude of the Equator.
9. Cyclones, Anticyclones and Rotation: Avoid This Common Trap
| System | Northern Hemisphere | Southern Hemisphere |
|---|---|---|
| Low Pressure / Cyclone | Generally anticlockwise | Generally clockwise |
| High Pressure / Anticyclone | Generally clockwise | Generally anticlockwise |
Why? Coriolis gives the hemispheric deflection, while pressure-gradient force determines whether air is moving inward toward low pressure or outward from high pressure.
10. Rotation and Earth’s Shape: Why is the Equator Bulged?
Earth is not a perfect sphere. It is slightly wider at the Equator and slightly flattened at the poles.
One reason is rotation. Material near the Equator is farthest from the rotation axis and experiences the greatest rotational outward effect. Over geological time, Earth adjusted to a slightly oblate shape.
The detailed distinction between sphere, oblate spheroid and geoid was covered in the first Earth post.
11. Does Rotation Affect Gravity?
Yes, slightly. The rotational outward effect is greatest at the Equator and zero at the poles. Therefore, effective gravity is slightly reduced by rotation near the Equator.
Earth’s equatorial bulge also places a person at the Equator slightly farther from Earth’s centre than a person at a pole. Both factors help make measured gravity somewhat lower near the Equator than near the poles.
Exam-safe idea: Rotation does not cancel gravity. Gravity is overwhelmingly stronger; rotation only makes a small correction to effective weight.
12. Why Do We Not Feel Earth Rotating?
This is one of the most common doubts. At the Equator we are moving at roughly 1,670 km/h, so why do we not feel such enormous speed?
1. We move together with Earth
Land, oceans, atmosphere, buildings and our bodies already share Earth’s rotational motion.
2. Motion is smooth
Humans strongly notice sudden changes in motion. Earth’s rotation is extremely steady on everyday timescales.
3. Gravity holds us to Earth
Earth’s gravity is much stronger than the small rotational outward effect at the surface.
Easy analogy: In a smoothly moving aeroplane, you can walk and drink water normally even though the aircraft is travelling hundreds of kilometres per hour. You mainly feel acceleration, braking or turbulence — not steady shared motion.
13. Foucault Pendulum: Direct Visual Evidence of Earth’s Rotation
A Foucault pendulum is a large pendulum allowed to swing freely in a vertical plane. Its swing plane tends to remain nearly fixed relative to distant space, while Earth rotates underneath it. To an observer standing on Earth, the plane of swing appears to rotate.
Latitude dependence
At a pole: apparent rotation is fastest — approximately one full turn in a day.
At the Equator: ideal horizontal precession is zero.
Between them: the apparent rotation rate depends on latitude.
Advanced enrichment: approximate Foucault precession rate = 15° × sin(latitude) per hour. You do not need this formula for most UPSC questions, but it explains why the effect is strongest at the poles and disappears at the Equator.
14. Other Evidence and Observable Clues of Rotation
Daily apparent motion of sky
Sun, Moon and stars appear to sweep across the sky from east to west every day.
Coriolis deflection
Large-scale moving air and water show systematic hemispheric deflection.
Earth’s equatorial bulge
The planet’s oblate shape is consistent with the long-term effect of rotation.
Foucault pendulum
Provides a direct, easily visible terrestrial demonstration that Earth rotates.
15. Does Earth Always Rotate at Exactly the Same Rate?
For everyday geography we treat Earth’s rotation as uniform. In reality, its rotation rate changes by very small amounts because Earth is a complex system.
The Moon’s tidal interaction gradually transfers angular momentum and very slowly lengthens Earth’s day over geological time.
Movement of atmosphere, oceans, ice and material inside Earth can produce tiny short-term variations.
UPSC level: Remember the concept, not tiny daily variations. For standard geography calculations, use the 24-hour mean solar day and the 15° per hour rule.
16. What Rotation Does — and Does Not — Cause
| Phenomenon | Mainly caused by Rotation? | Correct Concept |
|---|---|---|
| Day and night | Yes | Earth turns different places toward and away from the Sun. |
| Local-time difference | Yes | Different longitudes face the Sun at different times. |
| Coriolis effect | Yes | Apparent deflection in Earth’s rotating frame. |
| Equatorial bulge | Yes, an important factor | Long-term rotational adjustment makes Earth oblate. |
| Seasons | No | Mainly axial tilt + revolution. |
| Tides | Not primarily | Main cause is differential gravity of Moon and Sun; rotation carries locations through the tidal pattern. |
| Time zones | Indirect basis | Longitude-time difference comes from rotation; legal time zones are human conventions. |
17. What if Earth Rotated in the Opposite Direction?
This is a favourite examination thought experiment. If Earth’s rotation were reversed while other assumptions were kept the same:
The apparent daily motion of the Sun would reverse.
The usual East ahead / West behind local-time rule would reverse.
Coriolis deflection directions would reverse.
Exam method: Do not memorise a new formula. Reverse the directional logic produced by rotation, then calculate normally.
18. Previous Year Questions: Rotation and Coriolis
PYQ strategy: These questions repeatedly test four things — cause of Coriolis, direction of deflection, latitude dependence, and whether you can distinguish Earth’s rotation from revolution/axial tilt.
Q1. With reference to “Coriolis force”, which of the following statements is/are correct?
1. It increases with increase in wind velocity.
2. It is maximum at the poles and is absent at the equator.
Answer: (c) Both 1 and 2
Logic: Coriolis deflection becomes stronger as the speed of the moving air increases. Its latitude dependence is proportional to sin(latitude): sin 0° = 0 at the Equator, while sin 90° = 1 at the poles.
Question-decoding trick: UPSC directly tested two properties given in the conceptual box above. This is why “speed + latitude” must be memorised together.
Q2. What causes wind to deflect towards the left in the Southern Hemisphere?
Answer: (d) Coriolis force
Logic: Temperature and pressure differences can start and accelerate winds, but the systematic left/right sideways deflection comes from Earth’s rotation through the Coriolis effect. Southern Hemisphere → left.
Q3. Which of the following factors is responsible for the origin of the Coriolis force?
Answer: (c) Earth’s rotation
Logic: Planetary winds are affected by Coriolis; they do not create it. Axial tilt mainly controls seasonal solar geometry, while revolution controls the annual orbital motion. Coriolis arises because we observe motion from a rotating Earth.
Q4. Which force is responsible for the rotation of the plane of oscillation of Foucault’s pendulum as observed from Earth?
Answer: (d) Coriolis force
Logic: In Earth’s rotating frame, the apparent change in pendulum swing direction is described using Coriolis deflection. The deeper physical picture is that the pendulum’s swing plane tends to stay fixed while Earth rotates beneath it.
Q5. If Earth’s direction of rotation were reversed, what should be IST when it is noon at the International Date Line?
Logical answer: (c) 18:30 hrs
Logic: Reversing rotation reverses the normal east-ahead/west-behind relationship. The longitude gap between 180° and 82°30′E is 97°30′ = 6 h 30 min. Under reversed rotation, IST lies 6 h 30 min on the opposite time side of the IDL reference, giving 18:30 in the consistent calculation.
Source caution: The uploaded Ghatnachakra compilation prints option (a), but its own explanation ends with “6:30 pm”. The internally consistent result is 18:30, option (c). Treat this as a logic-building question, not as a fact to memorise.
19. UPSC Traps You Must Remember
Rotation direction: West → East.
Apparent sky motion: East → West.
Sidereal day: about 23 h 56 min 4 s; mean solar day ≈ 24 h.
15° per hour: geography shortcut based on 24-hour mean solar day.
Linear rotational speed: maximum at Equator, zero at geographic poles.
Coriolis: right in Northern Hemisphere, left in Southern Hemisphere.
Coriolis strength: zero at Equator, maximum at poles; increases with speed of moving air/water.
Coriolis does not start wind: pressure-gradient force starts/accelerates it; Coriolis deflects it.
Cyclone: anticlockwise in NH, clockwise in SH; anticyclone is opposite.
Seasons: not caused by rotation.
Tides: not primarily caused by rotation.
Foucault pendulum: direct visual evidence of Earth’s rotation; precession depends on latitude.
Quick Revision
Rotation = Earth spinning on its own axis.
Direction = west to east.
Sidereal rotation = about 23 h 56 min 4 s; mean solar day ≈ 24 h.
Basic time rule = 15° per hour = 1° in 4 minutes.
Linear speed is greatest at the Equator and becomes zero at the geographic poles.
Rotation causes the daily day–night cycle and apparent east-to-west motion of the sky.
Coriolis: Right in NH, Left in SH; Zero at Equator, Maximum at Poles.
Rotation contributes to equatorial bulge and slightly reduces effective gravity near the Equator.
Foucault pendulum provides direct visual evidence of rotation.
Think Like UPSC: When a question mentions rotation, first ask what kind of effect is being tested: daily illumination, time, linear speed, apparent motion, Coriolis deflection or rotational shape. Then eliminate concepts belonging to revolution and axial tilt. This single separation solves many statement-based questions.
20. Verification and Source Base
Core scientific facts in this post were cross-checked against NASA for sidereal/solar day concepts, NOAA for Coriolis behaviour and tropical-cyclone latitude constraints, and the Smithsonian Institution for the Foucault pendulum demonstration of Earth’s rotation.
PYQs were checked against the official UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2024 paper where available, and reputable indexed PYQ databases for UPPSC/SSC questions. The reverse-rotation IAS 1997 question is reproduced from the uploaded Ghatnachakra compilation with its answer-key inconsistency explicitly flagged rather than silently copied.

(Rotation)
(Revolution)
(Sidereal Day)
(Mean Solar Day)
A. कोणीय वेग (Angular Speed)
(Linear Speed)
