Background
The United Nations General Assembly declared 11 October as the International Day of the Girl Child through Resolution 66/170, adopted on 19 December 2011.
The day highlights girls' rights and the challenges they face in education, health, safety and participation.
According to the UN's 2026 campaign information:
- More than 12 million girls are married before adulthood every year.
- Approximately one in five girls worldwide is married before the age of 18.
- An estimated 68 million child marriages have been prevented over the past 25 years.
Child marriage can interrupt education, increase health risks and limit economic opportunities.
Poverty, harmful social norms, conflict, displacement and climate-related crises can increase vulnerability.
SDG Target 5.3 calls for eliminating harmful practices, including child, early and forced marriage.
In India, the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 is the principal legislation addressing child marriage.
Under the Act, the prescribed minimum marriage ages are 18 years for females and 21 years for males.
The 2026 UN campaign emphasises girls' education, legal protection, social support and participation in decisions affecting their lives.
