Mercury: Features, Rotation, Revolution and UPSC Facts
Mercury is the nearest planet to the Sun and the smallest planet in the Solar System. It is a small, rocky and heavily cratered world where a year is very short, but one complete day-night cycle is extraordinarily long.
Mercury is a planet of extremes: it moves around the Sun faster than any other planet, rotates slowly, experiences intense daytime heat and freezing nights, and still preserves water ice inside permanently shadowed polar craters.
1. Basic Identity of Mercury
Position
Mercury is the first planet from the Sun.
Type
It is an inner, terrestrial or rocky planet.
Size
It is the smallest of the eight planets.
Moon and Rings
Mercury has no natural satellite and no ring system.
Mercury's radius is about 2,440 km. It is only a little larger than Earth's Moon, but it is a true planet because it directly orbits the Sun and has cleared most other large objects from the region around its orbit.
2. Why is Mercury Called the Fastest Planet?
Mercury is called the fastest planet because it completes its revolution around the Sun faster than every other planet.
Revolution means the movement of a planet around the Sun. Mercury moves at an average orbital speed of about 47 km per second, making it the fastest-moving planet in its orbit.
Easy Example: If Earth takes about 365 days to complete one round of the Sun, Mercury completes more than four Mercury years during nearly the same Earth-year period.
3. Mercury's Orbit: Why is it Special?
Mercury does not move around the Sun in a perfect circle. Its orbit is noticeably elliptical, meaning slightly stretched or oval-shaped.
Perihelion
The point where Mercury is closest to the Sun, about 47 million km away.
Aphelion
The point where Mercury is farthest from the Sun, about 70 million km away.
The difference between these two distances is large enough to noticeably change Mercury's orbital speed. It moves faster near perihelion and slower near aphelion.
4. Rotation of Mercury
Rotation means the spinning of a planet around its own axis. Mercury rotates very slowly.
This period of about 59 Earth days is called Mercury's sidereal day. A sidereal day measures how long the planet takes to rotate once relative to distant stars.
Mercury rotates in the same general direction as Earth and most other planets. It is therefore not a retrograde-rotating planet like Venus.
5. The Important Difference: 59-Day Rotation but 176-Day Solar Day
This is one of the most important and confusing facts about Mercury.
Sidereal Day
Time taken to rotate once relative to distant stars: about 59 Earth days.
Solar Day
Time from one sunrise to the next sunrise: about 176 Earth days.
Why is the solar day so long? While Mercury rotates slowly, it is also moving rapidly around the Sun. Therefore, after one complete rotation, Mercury must rotate much more before the Sun returns to the same position in its sky.
UPSC Trap: Mercury's rotational period is about 59 Earth days, but its full day-night cycle is about 176 Earth days. These two values are not contradictory; they measure different things.
6. What is the 3:2 Spin-Orbit Resonance?
Mercury has a special relationship between its rotation and revolution called a 3:2 spin-orbit resonance.
This stable pattern developed because the Sun's gravity repeatedly acted on Mercury over a very long period. It is the main reason why Mercury's rotation, year and solar day are linked in such an unusual way.
Memory Trick: 3 Spins : 2 Orbits — Mercury turns three times during two Mercury years.
7. Does Mercury Have Seasons?
Mercury's rotational axis is tilted by only about 2°. It therefore spins almost upright.
On Earth, the axial tilt of about 23.5° is the major cause of seasons. Since Mercury's tilt is extremely small, it does not experience strong seasons like Earth.
8. Surface and Major Landforms
Mercury's surface looks similar to the Moon because both are covered by numerous impact craters. These craters formed when asteroids and comets struck the surface.
Caloris Basin
One of Mercury's largest impact basins, about 1,550 km across.
Scarps or Cliffs
Long cliffs formed when Mercury cooled, contracted and its crust was compressed.
Crater Rays
Bright streaks of material thrown outward during powerful impacts.
Smooth Plains
Relatively flat areas, some linked with ancient volcanic activity and impact processes.
Mercury has a very large metallic core. Its core makes up most of the planet's radius, while the rocky mantle and crust form a comparatively thin outer shell.
9. Why Does Mercury Have Extreme Temperatures?
Mercury receives intense solar energy because it is close to the Sun. However, the main reason for its huge day-night temperature difference is the absence of a thick atmosphere.
Daytime
Temperature may rise to about 430°C.
Night-time
Temperature may fall to about −180°C.
UPSC Trap: Mercury is closest to the Sun, but it is not the hottest planet. Venus is hotter because its dense carbon dioxide atmosphere produces an intense greenhouse effect.
10. Atmosphere or Exosphere?
Mercury does not have a substantial atmosphere like Earth or Venus. Instead, it has an extremely thin exosphere.
An exosphere is a very thin collection of atoms and particles around a planet. The particles are so widely separated that they do not behave like a normal dense atmosphere.
Many of these particles are knocked off Mercury's surface by solar wind and micrometeoroid impacts. Because Mercury has weak gravity and intense solar heating, it cannot easily retain a thick atmosphere.
11. Water Ice on the Planet Closest to the Sun
Water ice exists inside some deep craters near Mercury's north and south poles. This may appear surprising because Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun.
NASA's MESSENGER mission confirmed that the bright deposits in many permanently shadowed polar regions are dominated by water ice.
Concept Link: A planet's average distance from the Sun does not alone decide the temperature of every location. Local sunlight, shadow, atmosphere and surface conditions also matter.
12. Mercury's Magnetic Field
Mercury has a global magnetic field, although it is much weaker than Earth's magnetic field. This is scientifically important because Mercury is a small rocky planet whose interior might have been expected to cool completely.
The magnetic field suggests that at least part of Mercury's large metallic core remains molten or capable of supporting a dynamo-like process.
The region controlled by this field is called the magnetosphere. Mercury's magnetosphere strongly interacts with the solar wind because the planet lies so close to the Sun.
13. Important Missions to Mercury
Mariner 10
NASA's first mission to visit Mercury. It made three flybys during 1974–1975 and revealed the planet's cratered surface and magnetic field.
MESSENGER
NASA's first spacecraft to orbit Mercury. It studied the surface, composition, magnetic field, geology and polar water ice from 2011 to 2015.
BepiColombo
A joint ESA–JAXA mission carrying two orbiters to investigate Mercury's surface, interior, magnetic environment and interaction with solar wind.
Current Mission Update — July 2026: ESA lists BepiColombo as operational and approaching Mercury, with Mercury orbit insertion planned for November 2026 and routine science operations expected to begin in early 2027.
14. Mercury and the Moon: Similar but Not the Same
| Basis | Mercury | Earth's Moon |
|---|---|---|
| Nature | A planet orbiting the Sun | A natural satellite orbiting Earth |
| Surface | Heavily cratered | Heavily cratered |
| Atmosphere | Extremely thin exosphere | Extremely thin exosphere |
| Magnetic Field | Has a weak global magnetic field | Does not have a present global magnetic field |
| Size | Larger | Smaller |
15. High-Value UPSC Facts and Exam Traps
Trap 1
Nearest planet to the Sun does not mean hottest planet. Venus is hottest.
Trap 2
Mercury's year is about 88 days, but its solar day is about 176 days.
Trap 3
Mercury has no substantial atmosphere, but it does have a very thin exosphere.
Trap 4
Mercury has no moon and no rings, but it does possess a weak global magnetic field.
Trap 5
Water ice can exist on Mercury in permanently shadowed polar craters.
Trap 6

Think Like UPSC: Do not memorise Mercury only as the nearest planet. Connect its location, weak atmosphere, slow rotation, near-zero axial tilt and elliptical orbit with its extreme temperatures, long solar day, weak seasons and polar ice. UPSC often tests these cause-and-effect relationships rather than isolated facts.
(Perihelion)
(Aphelion)
(Spin-Orbit Resonance).
MESSENGER
(Spin-Orbit Resonance).
