HUMAN DIGESTIVE SYSTEM & DIGESTIVE ENZYMES

The Food Journey · Think–Predict–Discover · Very Easy English · UPSC / UPPSC / State PCS + selected NEET/AIPMT concepts

CognitoIAS Science Class overview of the human digestive system and organs
THE MISSION: FOLLOW ONE MEAL

Imagine your lunch: roti + dal + a little ghee. You swallow it in seconds. But how does this food reach your cells?

Roti brings starch. Dal brings proteins. Ghee brings fat. All three take the same road, but need different enzymes.

The mystery: Where does each start breaking down? Who supplies the enzymes? Where do the small nutrients finally go?

How to read this lesson

At each stop: PREDICT the answer → DISCOVER the reason → BEAT THE EXAM TRAP. Try the small checkpoints before looking at the answer. No memorisation without understanding!

MISSION START
THE BIG PICTURE

What must food become before your cells can use it?

1. First Understand the Big Idea

DISCOVERY DIALOGUE · GUESS FIRST, THEN READ

STUDENT: Can my body use a piece of roti exactly as I swallow it?
TEACHER: Imagine trying to move a whole sofa through a tiny door. What would you do first?
STUDENT: Break it into smaller pieces!
TEACHER: Exactly. Large food molecules must be changed into absorbable small molecules. That is digestion. Now guess: does food actually enter the liver?
STUDENT: Maybe not. The liver sends something to the food!
TEACHER: Correct. Food travels through the alimentary canal; the liver, pancreas and salivary glands help by sending secretions.

Food travels through one continuous tube

Mouth → Pharynx → Oesophagus → Stomach → Small intestine → Large intestine → Rectum → Anus

This tube is the alimentary canal / gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The small intestine has three parts: Duodenum → Jejunum → Ileum.

Who helps from outside?

  • Salivary glands produce saliva.

  • Liver produces bile.

  • Gallbladder stores and concentrates bile.

  • Pancreas produces pancreatic juice.

START HERE

Digestive system = Alimentary canal + Accessory digestive organs. The gallbladder is an accessory organ, not a digestive gland that makes bile.

2. Digestion, Absorption and Assimilation Are Different

STUDENT: If food has been digested, has the body already used it?
TEACHER: Not yet. First it must be absorbed, then used by cells. These are different steps.
  • Ingestion: taking food into the mouth.

  • Digestion: breaking complex food into smaller molecules (for example, starch → smaller sugars).

  • Absorption: nutrients cross the intestinal lining into blood or lymph.

  • Assimilation: body cells use the absorbed nutrients (for example, glucose supplies energy).

  • Egestion: removal of undigested residue as faeces through the anus.

Eat → Break → Absorb → Use → Remove

EXAM TRAP: Egestion ≠ Excretion

Egestion removes undigested food. Excretion removes metabolic wastes, such as urea and carbon dioxide.

3. Two Types of Digestion

STUDENT: Is chewing also digestion if no enzyme acts?
TEACHER: Yes. Digestion may be mechanical or chemical.
  • Mechanical digestion: physical breakdown—chewing in mouth and churning in stomach.

  • Chemical digestion: enzymes break chemical bonds in large molecules, for example starch —amylase→ smaller sugars.

RECALL

Digestive enzymes are biological catalysts. Their general chemistry belongs to the Biomolecules & Enzymes chapter.
YOUR TURN · THINK FOR 10 SECONDS

A teacher crushes a biscuit but uses no enzyme. Which kind of digestion happened?

CHECK: Mechanical digestion; physical size is reduced, but chemical bonds are not broken by a digestive enzyme.
STOP 1: MOUTH
ROTI: STARCH BEGINS

What happens to the roti while you chew?

4. Mouth — Digestion Starts Here

Mouth salivary glands and beginning of starch digestion by salivary amylase

DISCOVERY DIALOGUE · GUESS FIRST, THEN READ

STUDENT: I take a bite of roti. Is my mouth only a chewing machine?
TEACHER: Think first: if the roti stays in your mouth for a while, does anything happen to its starch?
STUDENT: Saliva might start breaking it down.
TEACHER: Yes. Salivary amylase (ptyalin) starts splitting starch into smaller carbohydrates such as maltose and dextrins. Teeth also make smaller pieces.
STUDENT: Then does the mouth digest dal protein as well?
TEACHER: Not significantly. Protein digestion begins in the stomach. Different foods need different enzymes.

Three pairs of major salivary glands

  • Parotid

  • Submandibular / Submaxillary

  • Sublingual

Saliva helps swallowing and contains protective substances. Its main starch-digesting enzyme is salivary amylase (ptyalin).

Starch → Maltose + smaller dextrins

EXAM FACT

Carbohydrate digestion begins in the mouth. Amylase acts on starch; it does not digest cellulose.
PRECISION: Amylase breaks starch mainly into maltose, maltotriose and dextrins; brush-border enzymes then finish these into absorbable glucose. “Amylase directly converts all starch to glucose” is an over-simplification.

5. Does Saliva Digest Protein?

STUDENT: Saliva contains an enzyme. Why does it not digest protein too?
TEACHER: Because enzymes act on particular substrates. Salivary amylase mainly acts on starch, not protein.
Mouth: carbohydrate digestion begins → Stomach: protein digestion begins

6. What Happens During Swallowing?

Food passes from mouth → pharynx → oesophagus. During swallowing, the airway is protected by coordinated movements, including the epiglottis, which helps cover the entrance to the windpipe.

STUDENT: Then why do we cough while eating?
TEACHER: If food or liquid goes towards the airway, the cough reflex helps protect the respiratory tract.

EXAM FACT

Epiglottis is linked with prevention of food entry into the airway.
YOUR TURN · THINK FOR 10 SECONDS

Food accidentally starts entering the airway. Name the protective flap and one reflex.

CHECK: Epiglottis helps protect the airway during swallowing; coughing helps remove misdirected material.

7. Oesophagus — Does Gravity Pull Food Down?

Oesophagus transporting a food bolus towards the stomach by peristalsis

DISCOVERY DIALOGUE · GUESS FIRST, THEN READ

STUDENT: Food reaches the stomach because gravity pulls it down, right?
TEACHER: What if you swallow while lying down? Would the food have to stop?
STUDENT: No, the food can still move.
TEACHER: So gravity is not the main driver. Peristalsis is a wave of muscle contraction that pushes food along the oesophagus.
STUDENT: Like squeezing a soft tube behind the food?
TEACHER: Exactly. The food pipe is mainly a transport route, not an enzyme factory.

Peristalsis also helps move contents through other parts of the GI tract. The oesophagus is mainly a transport tube, not a major site of chemical digestion.

REMEMBER

Peristalsis = wave-like muscular movement that pushes food forward.
STOP 2: STOMACH
DAL: PROTEIN BEGINS

What begins to happen to dal proteins?

8. Stomach — The Mixing Chamber

Stomach gastric acid pepsin and protective gastric lining
READING NOTE — HCl provides an acidic medium and helps activate pepsinogen. Pepsin starts protein digestion; the mucus–bicarbonate barrier helps protect the stomach lining.
STUDENT: What exactly does the stomach do?
TEACHER: Think of it as a storage tank + mixer + chemical-processing chamber. It stores food temporarily, churns it, mixes it with gastric juice, and begins protein digestion.

The semi-fluid mixture leaving the stomach is called chyme. Food passes towards the duodenum through the pyloric sphincter.

9. Hydrochloric Acid — Why Is Acid in the Stomach?

DISCOVERY DIALOGUE · GUESS FIRST, THEN READ

STUDENT: Why would the stomach put acid next to the food?
TEACHER: Predict: if pepsin works best in an acidic place, what must the stomach provide?
STUDENT: An acidic environment!
TEACHER: Yes. Parietal (oxyntic) cells release HCl, which helps activate pepsinogen and reduces many swallowed microbes.
STUDENT: Do these cells do any other important job?
TEACHER: They also release intrinsic factor, needed later for vitamin B12 absorption in the terminal ileum.
  • HCl is secreted by parietal (oxyntic) cells.

  • It creates an acidic medium for gastric protein digestion.

  • It helps pepsinogen → pepsin.

  • It helps limit many microbes.

NEET / AIPMT CELL FACT

Parietal / oxyntic cells also secrete intrinsic factor, needed for later absorption of vitamin B12 in the terminal ileum.

10. Why Doesn't the Stomach Digest Itself?

DISCOVERY DIALOGUE · GUESS FIRST, THEN READ

STUDENT: Sir, the stomach contains acid and a protein-digesting enzyme. Why does it not digest itself?
TEACHER: Imagine a chemical laboratory. Would its containers need protection?
STUDENT: Yes. They would need a protective lining.
TEACHER: The stomach has a mucus–bicarbonate barrier, tightly joined lining cells and rapid repair. It also releases much pepsin as inactive pepsinogen first.
STUDENT: So protection is not just one coat of mucus?
TEACHER: Correct. Several defences work together.
  • Mucus–bicarbonate barrier protects the surface.

  • Tight epithelial junctions limit acid entry.

  • The lining can repair and renew itself.

  • Chief cells first release inactive pepsinogen, not large amounts of active pepsin.

CELL MAP — STOMACH

Chief / peptic cells → Pepsinogen
Parietal / oxyntic cells → HCl + intrinsic factor
Surface mucous cells → protective gastric mucus.

11. Pepsin — Protein Digestion Begins Here

Stomach chief cells release pepsinogen. Acidic conditions activate it into pepsin; pepsin can also help activate more pepsinogen.

Pepsinogen → Pepsin → Proteins → shorter peptides

SCIENTIFIC CORRECTION

Pepsin does not complete protein digestion directly into free amino acids. It mainly forms smaller peptides. Further pancreatic and intestinal enzymes complete digestion in the small intestine.

GOLDEN RULE

Protein digestion begins in the stomach.
YOUR TURN · THINK FOR 10 SECONDS

True or false: pepsin converts a whole protein directly into free amino acids.

CHECK: False. Pepsin mainly makes smaller peptides; intestinal digestion finishes the job.
OLD PYQ WORDING ALERT: Some old answer explanations loosely say “pepsin converts protein into amino acids.” In a modern concept question, answer more precisely: pepsin mainly produces peptides; other enzymes complete digestion to absorbable amino acids.

12. Pepsin, Trypsin and Chymotrypsin — Do Not Confuse

STUDENT: All three digest proteins. What is different?
TEACHER: Their source and main site of action are different.
  • Pepsin: stomach enzyme; acts in acidic stomach.

  • Trypsin: released by pancreas as inactive trypsinogen; acts in small intestine.

  • Chymotrypsin: released by pancreas as inactive chymotrypsinogen; acts in small intestine.

EXAM TRAP

Among pepsin, trypsin and chymotrypsin, the stomach protein-digesting enzyme is PEPSIN.
THE SUPPORT TEAM
LIVER + GALLBLADDER + PANCREAS

Food does not enter the liver or pancreas. Their juices enter the food tube.

13. Liver — The Largest Gland

The liver is the largest gland in the human body. Its major digestive secretion is bile. It also processes absorbed nutrients, synthesises many plasma proteins, helps detoxify substances, and converts toxic ammonia into urea.

STUDENT: What happens to extra glucose after a carbohydrate-rich meal?
TEACHER: Some glucose can be stored as glycogen, especially in the liver and skeletal muscles. This connects digestion → absorption → storage.

EXAM LINK

Liver → bile + urea production + glycogen storage. The liver is not the main source of pancreatic lipase.

14. Gallbladder — Does It Produce Bile?

STUDENT: Bile is stored in gallbladder, so gallbladder makes it?
TEACHER: No. This is a classic exam trap.
  • Liver = Factory: produces bile.

  • Gallbladder = Storage tank: stores and concentrates bile.

  • Duodenum = Delivery point: receives bile through bile ducts.

MEMORY

Liver makes → Gallbladder stores → Duodenum receives.

15. Bile — Is It a Digestive Enzyme?

Liver gallbladder bile salts and emulsification of dietary fat in the duodenum

DISCOVERY DIALOGUE · GUESS FIRST, THEN READ

STUDENT: Bile has no lipase. Why do we need it for fat digestion?
TEACHER: Imagine one large drop of ghee and 100 tiny droplets. Which offers more surface for an enzyme to attack?
STUDENT: The many tiny droplets!
TEACHER: That is why bile salts emulsify fat: they disperse large fat globules into tiny droplets. Bile itself contains no digestive enzyme.
STUDENT: Then who really breaks fat molecules?
TEACHER: Pancreatic lipase. Remember the teamwork: bile prepares; lipase digests.

Emulsification disperses one large fat globule into many tiny droplets, increasing surface area for pancreatic lipase.

WRITE PRECISELY

Bile helps fat digestion by emulsifying fat—not “bile itself chemically digests fat.”
YOUR TURN · THINK FOR 10 SECONDS

Choose the correct pair: (A) Bile = enzyme, (B) Bile = emulsifier.

CHECK: (B). Bile salts emulsify fat; pancreatic lipase chemically digests fat.

16. Pancreas — One Organ, Two Jobs

STUDENT: Is pancreas digestive or endocrine?
TEACHER: Both. It is a mixed gland.
  • Exocrine part: sends enzyme-rich pancreatic juice into duodenum.

  • Endocrine part: releases hormones such as insulin and glucagon into blood.

Detailed insulin/glucagon actions belong to the separate Endocrine System notes.

17. Why Is Pancreatic Juice So Important?

Pancreas and pancreatic juice digestive enzymes entering the duodenum
ENZYME ACTIVATION — Pancreatic proteases are released mainly as inactive zymogens. In the duodenum, enteropeptidase activates trypsinogen; trypsin then activates other zymogens, including chymotrypsinogen and procarboxypeptidase.

Think of the pancreas as a multi-tool kit: one tool works on starch, another on proteins, another on fat, and another on DNA/RNA. Bicarbonate prepares a suitable working environment. Now learn each tool by name.

Pancreatic juice enters the duodenum and is rich in digestive enzymes and bicarbonate.

  • Pancreatic amylase: starch → smaller sugars.

  • Trypsin, chymotrypsin, carboxypeptidase: proteins / peptides → smaller peptides and amino-acid products.

  • Pancreatic lipase: triglycerides → mainly fatty acids + monoglycerides.

  • Pancreatic nucleases: DNA/RNA → nucleotides.

  • Bicarbonate: neutralises acidic chyme, helping pancreatic enzymes work.

OLDER EXAM PHRASE

Some competitive-exam books call pancreatic juice “complete digestive juice” because it has enzymes for the major food groups. This is a textbook/exam expression, not a precise modern classification.

CAUTION

Some old keys call pancreas the “second-largest gland.” This is not a dependable universal anatomical ranking; remember the unambiguous fact: liver = largest gland.

18. Why Doesn't the Pancreas Digest Itself?

DISCOVERY DIALOGUE · GUESS FIRST, THEN READ

STUDENT: If the pancreas makes protein-digesting enzymes, why does it not digest its own proteins?
TEACHER: Imagine dangerous scissors. Should they be opened inside the factory or only at the work site?
STUDENT: Only at the work site!
TEACHER: Right. Many pancreatic proteases travel in inactive forms called zymogens. In the duodenum, enteropeptidase helps activate trypsinogen to trypsin.
STUDENT: And then trypsin helps activate other zymogens?
TEACHER: Exactly—including chymotrypsinogen and procarboxypeptidase.
Trypsinogen → Enteropeptidase acts → Trypsin

Enteropeptidase (enterokinase) is located on the duodenal brush border. Once active, trypsin helps activate other pancreatic zymogens.

PANCREATIC ZYMOGEN MAP

Trypsinogen → Trypsin
Chymotrypsinogen → Chymotrypsin
Procarboxypeptidase → Carboxypeptidase.
YOUR TURN · THINK FOR 10 SECONDS

A question says: pancreatic trypsinogen becomes active in the stomach. Correct it.

CHECK: Trypsinogen is activated in the small intestine, beginning with enteropeptidase at the brush border.
STOP 3: SMALL INTESTINE
MOST DIGESTION + ABSORPTION

The busiest station: finish digestion, then absorb nutrients.

19. Small Intestine — The Main Digestion and Absorption Centre

Small intestine duodenum jejunum ileum villi and intestinal digestive secretions
SCIENTIFIC CLARIFICATION — Bile and pancreatic juice enter the duodenum through ducts. Intestinal fluid comes from the intestinal lining, while many final-digestion enzymes are attached to the brush border. Most long-chain fats reach lacteals only after packaging as chylomicrons.

DISCOVERY DIALOGUE · GUESS FIRST, THEN READ

STUDENT: Most digestion has already started. Why is the small intestine the main station?
TEACHER: Think of our meal: the roti starch, dal protein and ghee fat still need final processing. Where should enzymes and absorption meet?
STUDENT: In one long place with a large surface!
TEACHER: Correct. The small intestine handles most chemical digestion and most nutrient absorption. It is also the longest part of the alimentary canal.
STUDENT: Why call it small, then?
TEACHER: Because it is narrower than the large intestine, not shorter.

It is the longest part of the alimentary canal, though narrower than the large intestine. It is highly coiled and has three parts:

Duodenum → Jejunum → Ileum

EXAM FACT

Small intestine = longest part of alimentary canal + major digestion + major absorption.

20. Duodenum — The Mixing Junction

DISCOVERY DIALOGUE · GUESS FIRST, THEN READ

STUDENT: The stomach sends acidic chyme forward. Can pancreatic enzymes work well in all that acid?
TEACHER: What would you do before using enzymes that prefer a less acidic place?
STUDENT: Neutralise much of the acid.
TEACHER: Exactly. Pancreatic bicarbonate and protective intestinal secretions help. The duodenum also receives bile and pancreatic enzymes.
STUDENT: And who controls the shared duct opening?
TEACHER: The sphincter of Oddi helps regulate the flow of bile and pancreatic juice at the hepatopancreatic opening.

The duodenum is the first and shortest part of the small intestine. It receives acidic chyme from stomach, bile from liver/gallbladder, and pancreatic juice from pancreas.

Acidic chyme + Bile + Pancreatic juice + Intestinal secretions → Major chemical processing
  • Acid is neutralised.

  • Fat is emulsified and acted on by lipase.

  • Carbohydrates and proteins undergo further enzyme digestion.

NEET/AIPMT BOOSTER

Sphincter of Oddi → hepatopancreatic opening in duodenum.
Brunner’s glands → duodenal submucosa → bicarbonate-rich alkaline mucus that helps protect against acid.

21. Why Must Stomach Acid Be Neutralised?

STUDENT: Why not let stomach HCl continue acting in small intestine?
TEACHER: Pancreatic and intestinal enzymes generally need a less acidic environment. Bicarbonate from pancreas, together with protective intestinal secretions, helps neutralise acidic chyme.
  • Protects the duodenal lining.

  • Creates a better pH for pancreatic enzymes.

  • Helps inactivate stomach pepsin after food moves onward.

22. Jejunum and Ileum — Major Absorption Continues

Duodenum participates in both digestion and absorption. The jejunum is a major nutrient-absorption site, and the ileum continues absorption.

  • Jejunum: much carbohydrate and protein absorption.

  • Terminal ileum: especially important for bile salts and vitamin B12–intrinsic factor complex.

  • Ileum opens into caecum at the ileo-caecal junction.

OLD IAS LENGTH ORDER

Conventional decreasing length: Ileum > Jejunum > Duodenum. The jejunum and ileum are highly coiled.
YOUR TURN · THINK FOR 10 SECONDS

Which region is especially important for intrinsic factor–vitamin B12 uptake?

CHECK: The terminal ileum.

23. Why Is the Small Intestine So Good at Absorption?

DISCOVERY DIALOGUE · GUESS FIRST, THEN READ

STUDENT: How can such a narrow intestine absorb most nutrients?
TEACHER: Which offers more surface in a small space: a flat sheet of paper or the same sheet folded many times?
STUDENT: The folded sheet packs more surface into the same space.
TEACHER: Exactly! The intestine has folds, villi and microvilli that give a very large absorbing surface.
STUDENT: Do villi also contain transport routes?
TEACHER: Yes. Blood capillaries carry many water-soluble nutrients, while central lymph vessels called lacteals receive most long-chain dietary fat after packaging.
Folds → Villi → Microvilli → Large absorptive area

Villi are finger-like projections of the intestinal lining. Microvilli are tiny projections on the surface of absorptive epithelial cells.

EXAM FACT

Villi increase surface area for absorption. Microvilli carry brush-border enzymes and also increase area.

24. What Goes Into Blood and What Goes Into Lymph?

Villus showing nutrient absorption into blood capillaries and lacteals
BLOOD VS LYMPH — FOLLOW THE CORRECT ARROWS — Glucose and amino acids → intestinal cells → blood capillaries → hepatic portal vein → liver. For most long-chain fats: micelles bring lipids to the cell surface → lipids enter cells → triglycerides are re-formed → chylomicrons → lacteals → lymph → blood. Micelles do not enter cells intact; some short-chain fatty acids may enter portal blood directly.

Two travel routes: water-friendly nutrients mostly use the blood route. Most long-chain fats need extra packing and first take the lymph route. Read the two routes below.

DISCOVERY DIALOGUE · GUESS FIRST, THEN READ

STUDENT: If glucose, amino acids and fat are absorbed in the same intestine, do they all take the same exit?
TEACHER: Predict: sugar dissolves in water, but long-chain fat does not. Would their transport methods be identical?
STUDENT: Probably not.
TEACHER: Right. Many sugars and amino acids enter blood capillaries. Most long-chain fats are packed into chylomicrons and first enter lacteals (lymph).
STUDENT: Where do micelles fit in?
TEACHER: Micelles bring digested lipids to the cell surface. Their fat contents enter the cell, then are repacked as chylomicrons. The micelles themselves are not swallowed whole by the cell.

Water-soluble nutrients

  • Glucose and galactose: absorbed by Na⁺-linked co-transport into intestinal cells.

  • Fructose: absorbed mainly by facilitated diffusion.

  • Many amino acids: absorbed by carrier-mediated transport, often Na⁺-linked.

  • These then pass into blood capillaries and reach the liver through the portal circulation.

Most long-chain dietary fats

Fat digestion products → Micelles deliver lipids to intestinal cells → Triglycerides re-formed → Chylomicrons → Lacteals → Lymph → Blood

Micelles formed with bile salts carry fatty acids and monoglycerides to the cell surface. Micelles themselves do not normally enter the intestinal cells intact; their lipid contents enter. The cells reassemble triglycerides and package them as chylomicrons.

EXAM MEMORY

Glucose/galactose → Na⁺ co-transport
Fructose → facilitated diffusion
Most long-chain fats → micelles → chylomicrons → lacteals → lymph → blood.

SMALL EXCEPTION

Short-chain fatty acids and glycerol can enter intestinal blood more directly; do not memorise “all fats must enter lymph.”
YOUR TURN · THINK FOR 10 SECONDS

Fill the route: Fat product → ___ → intestinal cell → ___ → lacteal.

CHECK: Micelle delivers lipid to the surface → intestinal cell repacks lipid into a chylomicron → lacteal.
Transport in one easy line: Glucose + galactose share a sodium-linked entry route; fructose uses facilitated diffusion; many amino acids use sodium-linked carriers, while some use other carriers. Most long-chain fats use lymph first. These are distinct pathways—do not treat every nutrient as identical.

25. What Is Chyle?

STUDENT: Is chyle simply the digested food in the intestine?
TEACHER: No. Chyle is milky, fat-rich lymph formed after absorbed dietary fats enter intestinal lacteals.

DO NOT CONFUSE

Chyme = semi-fluid stomach contents.
Chyle = milky, fat-rich intestinal lymph.

26. Intestinal Enzymes — Final Finishing Work

The finishing desk: amylase does not finish starch digestion all alone. Brush-border enzymes make the small absorbable sugars.

DISCOVERY DIALOGUE · GUESS FIRST, THEN READ

STUDENT: If starch digestion began in the mouth, why are intestinal enzymes needed?
TEACHER: A large wooden log cannot become fine pieces in one cut. Does a first cut finish the job?
STUDENT: No. We need finishing cuts.
TEACHER: Exactly. Amylases make smaller carbohydrates, then brush-border enzymes such as maltase help make absorbable sugars.
STUDENT: What is succus entericus?
TEACHER: It means intestinal juice. Many finishing enzymes sit on the intestinal cell surface, rather than floating freely in the juice.

The intestinal mucosa produces intestinal juice (succus entericus). Many enzymes that finish digestion are attached to the brush border of intestinal cells.

  • Maltase: maltose → 2 glucose.

  • Sucrase: sucrose → glucose + fructose.

  • Lactase: lactose → glucose + galactose.

  • Peptidases: smaller peptides → amino acids.

  • Nucleotidases / nucleosidases / phosphatases: act on products of nucleic-acid digestion.

NEET / AIPMT TERMS

Succus entericus = intestinal juice. Erepsin is an older collective term for intestinal peptide-splitting enzymes. In older exam classification, nuclease is a pancreatic enzyme, not a characteristic succus-entericus enzyme.

STARCH DIGESTION SEQUENCE

Salivary amylase → Pancreatic amylase → Intestinal brush-border disaccharidases.

NEET / AIPMT Booster — Cells and Glands

  • Goblet cells → Mucus (lubrication + protection).

  • Paneth cells → Lysozyme and other antimicrobial substances; found in intestinal crypts (crypts of Lieberkühn).

  • Chief/peptic cells → Pepsinogen.

  • Parietal/oxyntic cells → HCl + intrinsic factor.

  • Hepatocytes / hepatic cells → Bile.

  • Brunner’s glands → Duodenal alkaline mucus.

SIX-LINE PYQ CELL MAP

Chief = Pepsinogen | Parietal = HCl + IF | Goblet = Mucus | Paneth = Lysozyme | Hepatic = Bile | Brunner = Duodenal alkaline mucus.
YOUR TURN · THINK FOR 10 SECONDS

Amylase has already acted on starch. Which enzyme can finish maltose into glucose?

CHECK: Maltase, an enzyme on the intestinal brush border.

27. What Are the Final Absorbable Products?

Remember the goal: digestion is successful only when food has become small enough for intestinal cells to absorb.

  • Carbohydrates → Monosaccharides: glucose, fructose, galactose.

  • Proteins → mainly amino acids (some di-/tripeptides are also taken into intestinal cells and then further broken down).

  • Triglycerides → mainly free fatty acids + monoglycerides; old elementary books simplify this as fatty acids + glycerol.

  • Nucleic acids → smaller components such as nitrogenous bases, pentose sugars and phosphate.

EXAM TRAP

“All carbohydrates finally become glucose” is too narrow. Glucose, fructose and galactose are all important absorbable monosaccharides.
STOP 4: LARGE INTESTINE
WATER + WASTE

What happens to the leftovers after nutrients are absorbed?

28. Large Intestine — Why Is It Needed?

Large intestine colon rectum remaining-water absorption and faeces formation
WATER-ABSORPTION EXAM CAUTION — Most water absorption occurs in the small intestine. The large intestine absorbs much of the remaining water and electrolytes and helps form faeces.

DISCOVERY DIALOGUE · GUESS FIRST, THEN READ

STUDENT: Most useful nutrients are absorbed. Is the large intestine useless?
TEACHER: What still needs to happen to the watery leftovers?
STUDENT: The body can take back water and salts.
TEACHER: Exactly. The large intestine mainly absorbs remaining water and electrolytes and helps form faeces. Gut microbes can also ferment some fibre.
STUDENT: So it is not the main place for digestive enzymes?
TEACHER: Correct. Its main role is water recovery and waste formation.
  • Caecum begins the large intestine.

  • Colon reclaims remaining water and salts.

  • Rectum stores faeces before egestion.

It is not the major site of enzymatic digestion. Some dietary fibre is fermented by gut microbes.

PYQ CELL FACT

Intestinal goblet cells secrete mucus, helping protect the lining and lubricate the passage of contents.

29. Why Is the Small Intestine Called “Small”?

STUDENT: But small intestine is longer than large intestine!
TEACHER: “Small” and “large” mainly refer to diameter, not total length.

REMEMBER

Small intestine = longer, narrower.
Large intestine = shorter, wider.
YOUR TURN · THINK FOR 10 SECONDS

True or false: the large intestine is longer than the small intestine.

CHECK: False. The small intestine is longer; the large intestine has a greater diameter.

30. Appendix — Where Is It Attached?

The vermiform appendix is a blind-ended tube attached to the caecum, at the beginning of the large intestine.

STUDENT: Is appendix completely useless?
TEACHER: It is not essential for digestion, but it contains lymphoid tissue and has immune-related functions. Avoid the absolute statement that it has no function.

VALVE NEARBY

The ileo-caecal valve lies where the ileum opens into the caecum and helps prevent backflow of large-intestinal contents into the small intestine.

31. Why Can't Humans Digest Cellulose?

DISCOVERY DIALOGUE · GUESS FIRST, THEN READ

STUDENT: Both starch and cellulose come from plants. Why do we digest roti starch but not cellulose?
TEACHER: If two locks look alike but have different inner shapes, will the same key open both?
STUDENT: Not necessarily.
TEACHER: Exactly. Amylase can break the bonds in starch, but humans lack cellulase for the bonds in cellulose.
STUDENT: Then fibre is not completely useless?
TEACHER: No. It helps bowel function, and some types are fermented by gut microbes.

Cellulose therefore largely behaves as dietary fibre. Some fibre components can be fermented by intestinal microbes, but our own enzymes do not digest cellulose like starch.

EXAM TRAP

Amylase digests starch, not cellulose.
EXAM DETECTIVE DESK
FAST CONCEPT CHECK

Distinguish hormones, enzymes and older textbook expressions.

32. Hormone or Enzyme? — A Major Exam Trap

DISCOVERY DIALOGUE · GUESS FIRST, THEN READ

STUDENT: Gastrin helps digestion. Is it therefore a digestive enzyme?
TEACHER: Imagine a factory: is the manager giving instructions the same as a machine that does the work?
STUDENT: No. The manager sends messages; the machine performs a task.
TEACHER: Exactly. Gastrin, secretin and CCK are hormones—messages. Pepsin, trypsin, amylase and lipase are enzymes—chemical workers.
STUDENT: So an important name in digestion need not be an enzyme?
TEACHER: Correct. First ask: Does it send a signal or catalyse food breakdown?
  • Gastrin: hormone; stimulates gastric acid secretion and stomach activity.

  • Secretin: hormone released mainly by duodenum in response to acidic chyme; promotes bicarbonate-rich pancreatic secretion.

  • Cholecystokinin (CCK): hormone released mainly in response to fats/proteins; stimulates gallbladder contraction and enzyme-rich pancreatic secretion.

  • Pepsin, trypsin, amylase and lipase: digestive enzymes.

EXAM MEMORY

Gastrin + Secretin + CCK = HORMONES.
Pepsin + Trypsin + Amylase + Lipase = ENZYMES.
YOUR TURN · THINK FOR 10 SECONDS

The options are pepsin, trypsin, ptyalin and gastrin. Which one is not an enzyme?

CHECK: Gastrin: it is a hormone, while the other three are digestive enzymes.

33. Enterogastrone — An Older Exam Term

Enterogastrone is an older umbrella term for intestinal hormonal effects that reduce gastric secretion or emptying, especially when fat reaches the small intestine. Modern physiology discusses individual hormones instead of treating enterogastrone as one major, precisely defined hormone.

OLD IAS-STYLE FACT

Acidic chyme in duodenum → secretin response.
Fat in small intestine → inhibitory intestinal hormonal responses (older term: enterogastrone).

34. Renin vs Rennin — Do Not Confuse

  • Renin (one n after e): enzyme released by kidney; acts on angiotensinogen in blood-pressure regulation. Not a digestive enzyme.

  • Rennin / chymosin (two n after e): milk-clotting protease classically described in young mammals. Older exam books sometimes associate it with infant gastric juice.

OLD AIPMT CAUTION

Some older question keys list pepsinogen + gastric lipase + rennin in infant gastric juice. Do not present chymosin as a major routine adult human digestive enzyme.
YOUR TURN · THINK FOR 10 SECONDS

Your exam says “renin digests milk.” Spot the spelling and concept trap.

CHECK: Renin is a kidney enzyme. Rennin/chymosin is the older milk-clotting term; its routine role in human infants must not be overstated.

35. Rapid Recall — Bile vs Lipase

STUDENT: I still confuse bile with lipase.
TEACHER: Remember this two-step picture: bile prepares; lipase digests.
Large fat globule → Bile emulsifies into tiny droplets → Pancreatic lipase breaks triglycerides

EXAM TRAP

Emulsification is physical dispersion. Lipase performs chemical digestion.

36. Rapid Recall — Where Does Each Food Start Digestion?

  • Carbohydrate: begins in mouth — salivary amylase.

  • Protein: begins in stomach — pepsin.

  • Fat: some digestion can occur through lingual/gastric lipases, but the bulk occurs in small intestine through pancreatic lipase.

  • Nucleic acids: mainly digested in small intestine by pancreatic nucleases and intestinal finishing enzymes.

OLD AIPMT CAUTION

Some old exam keys describe fat + cellulose as reaching the stomach undigested. Modern physiology recognises limited early fat digestion. Keep the old-key convention separate from the correct physiological explanation.

Revision task: cover the enzyme names with your hand. Look at the food and location, then say the enzyme before checking.

Mouth

  • Salivary amylase / ptyalin: starch → maltose and dextrins.

Stomach

  • Pepsin: proteins → smaller peptides.

  • Gastric lipase: limited fat digestion.

Pancreas (acts in small intestine)

  • Pancreatic amylase: starch → smaller carbohydrates.

  • Trypsin / chymotrypsin: proteins → peptides.

  • Carboxypeptidase: releases amino acids from peptide ends.

  • Pancreatic lipase: triglycerides → fatty acids + monoglycerides.

  • Nucleases: DNA/RNA → nucleotides.

Small-intestinal brush border

  • Maltase: maltose → glucose.

  • Sucrase: sucrose → glucose + fructose.

  • Lactase: lactose → glucose + galactose.

  • Peptidases: small peptides → amino acids.

  • Nucleotidases / nucleosidases: finish nucleic-acid digestion.

FAST ENZYME RECALL

Amylase → starch | Pepsin/trypsin → proteins | Lipase → fats | Nuclease → nucleic acids.

38. What If Lactase Is Missing?

DISCOVERY DIALOGUE · GUESS FIRST, THEN READ

STUDENT: Why can some people drink milk easily while others get bloating and diarrhoea?
TEACHER: What happens if a sugar enters the intestine but the enzyme needed to split it is missing?
STUDENT: The sugar can remain undigested.
TEACHER: Right. Too little lactase leaves lactose undigested; gut microbes can ferment it, causing gas and discomfort. This is lactose intolerance.
STUDENT: Is lactase the same as lipase?
TEACHER: No! Lactase → lactose (milk sugar); lipase → fat.

Lactose is the major sugar in milk. It is broken down by the intestinal brush-border enzyme lactase into glucose and galactose.

DO NOT CONFUSE

Lactase → lactose. Lipase → fat.

39. Gallstones — Why Can They Affect Fat Digestion?

DISCOVERY DIALOGUE · GUESS FIRST, THEN READ

STUDENT: How can a gallstone cause trouble after eating a fatty meal?
TEACHER: Suppose the bile-delivery pipe is blocked. Which helper can no longer reach the duodenum easily?
STUDENT: Bile! So fat is not emulsified as efficiently.
TEACHER: Correct. If a stone blocks bile flow, fat digestion and absorption may be impaired—especially after a fatty meal.
STUDENT: But the gallbladder still does not manufacture bile?
TEACHER: Right. Liver makes bile; gallbladder stores it.

EXAM LINK

Blocked bile delivery → fat digestion affected most.
YOUR TURN · THINK FOR 10 SECONDS

A blocked bile duct mainly affects the digestion of starch, protein or fat?

CHECK: Fat. Bile-salt delivery is impaired, reducing emulsification and fat absorption.

OUR LUNCH, FINALLY EXPLAINED

Roti (starch): mouth amylase starts; pancreatic amylase continues; brush-border enzymes finish sugars; glucose enters blood.

Dal (proteins): stomach pepsin starts; pancreatic proteases and intestinal peptidases finish; amino acids enter blood.

Ghee (fat): limited early lipase action is possible; bile emulsifies; pancreatic lipase breaks fat; lipid products reach cells in micelles; most long-chain lipids leave as chylomicrons through lacteals.

Now answer without looking: Why does our body need more than one enzyme?

42. Final Memory Box — Revision in 90 Seconds

Egestion ≠ Excretion
FINAL MISSION · 60-SECOND NO-LOOK CHALLENGE

Say aloud these six answers before reading the check-line:

  1. Where does starch digestion begin, protein digestion begin, and most fat digestion occur?

  2. Who produces bile? Who stores it?

  3. Which intestinal enzyme turns trypsinogen into trypsin?

  4. Why does the small intestine have villi?

  5. How does fructose absorption differ from glucose absorption?

  6. How do most long-chain fats reach the blood?

CHECK YOURSELF: mouth / stomach / mainly small intestine; liver / gallbladder; enteropeptidase; larger surface; facilitated diffusion / Na⁺ co-transport; micelle delivery → cell → chylomicron → lacteal → lymph → blood.

If you can explain WHY, not only WHAT, the concept is yours.

Editorial note: This is a concept-based teaching note. Older PYQ answer keys sometimes simplify fat digestion, rennin/chymosin, pancreatic juice, or the final products of protein digestion. Modern scientific distinctions have been kept explicit. Question years and exact exam labels should be checked against original official papers before attaching them to individual questions.

(Parotid Gland)

(Submandibular / Submaxillary Gland)

(Sublingual Gland)

(Dextrins)

(Peptides)

(Enzyme Activation)

(Trypsin)

(Chymosin)

(Mouth)

(Stomach)

(Pancreatic Enzymes)

(Small Intestinal Brush Border)
