KEN RIVER
Geography • Tributaries • Waterfalls • History • Ecology • Ken–Betwa Link
1. Origin, Course & Basin
Origin: Near Ahirgawan village, Rithi area of present-day Katni district, Madhya Pradesh, along the north-western Kaimur–Vindhyan uplands.
Important source variation: Older hydrological documents describe this location as Jabalpur district; district names in PYQs must be read in their historical context.
States and length: Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh; about 427 km (292 km in MP + 84 km in UP + 51 km along the border).
Basin: About 28,058 sq. km in a widely cited project-basin estimate; delineation methods can yield slightly different figures.
Flow: Generally north/north-east through the Bundelkhand and Panna–Bijawar uplands.
River mouth: Meets the Yamuna near Chilla/Chilla Ghat, Banda district (UP); it is a right-bank tributary of the Yamuna.
Key place: Banda stands on the Ken; the channel forms dramatic gorges in the Panna region.
River sequence: Ken → Yamuna → Ganga → Bay of Bengal.
2. Important Tributaries
Largest tributary: Sonar (Sunar); commonly cited basin area about 12,620 sq. km, associated with Sagar–Damoh.
Other tributaries: Bearma, Alona, Mirhasan, Shyamari/Simri, Banne, Kutni, Urmil, Kail and Chandrawal (names/spellings differ by source).
Shyamari/Simri: Confluence with the Ken near Gangau.
Khudar: Joins the Ken downstream of Raneh Falls, in the Ken Gharial Sanctuary area.
Banne and Urmil: Rangawan project is on the Banne; Urmil Dam is on the Urmil.
Avoid confusion: Sonar–Bearma → Ken basin; Bina–Jamni–Dhasan → Betwa basin.
3. Raneh Falls vs Pandav Falls
Raneh Falls: On the main Ken River, in Chhatarpur district, around 20 km from Khajuraho.
Granite canyon: About 5 km long and 30 m deep, with pink, red and grey crystalline rocks.
Pandav Falls: In Panna National Park, around 14 km from Panna; roughly 30 m high.
Important distinction: Pandav Falls is fed by a Ken tributary/stream, not the main Ken channel.
Tradition: Nearby caves are traditionally linked with the Pandavas; this is local belief, not proof of a historical event.

Panna Biosphere Reserve: Included in UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves in 2020.
Ken Gharial Sanctuary: Established in 1981; notified area 45.2 sq. km on the Ken–Khudar river stretch.

Conceptual distinction: National Park ≠ Tiger Reserve ≠ UNESCO Biosphere Reserve ≠ UNESCO World Heritage Site.
5. Chandela History & Khajuraho

Ajaigarh Fort: Near the Ken valley in Panna district, MP; later Chandela fort with Jain/temple remains.
Bhuragarh Fort: On the bank of the Ken near Banda; associated with Raja Guman Singh and restoration by Kirat Singh in 1746.
1857 context: Banda’s resistance in the revolt is associated with Nawab Ali Bahadur II; British forces retook the region in 1858.
Natbali Ka Mela: Held at Bhuragarh on Makar Sankranti in local commemoration and tradition.
Location trap: Bhuragarh = on the Ken bank; Kalinjar/Khajuraho = in its wider region, not directly on its bank.
