Tons–Mahana–Bihad–Belan River System
Very Short Notes | UPSC • UPPSC • MPPSC
Four rivers, four waterfalls, and the prehistoric Belan Valley — learn the correct connections.
01. The river system at a glance
Main river: Tons / Tamas / Tamsa (Central Indian river), a Ganga tributary.
Catchment: Vindhyan–Kaimur uplands, Rewa Plateau and the southern margin of the Ganga Plain.
Core connection: Mahana → Tons; Beehar/Bihad → Tons; Belan → Tons; Tons → Ganga.
Smaller connections: Bichhiya → Beehar; Sellar → Beehar (as identified by Rewa/Mauganj district administrations).
States: Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh; the four-river system reaches Prayagraj district.
Remember: Purwa = Tons; Keoti = Mahana; Chachai = Bihad; Bahuti = Sellar; Belan = prehistoric sites.
02. Tons / Tamas: origin, course and confluence
Source: Tamasa Kund (Tamakund), Kaimur hills near Jukhehi/Jhullehi in the Maihar area. Older books say Satna district, but Maihar became a separate district in 2023.
Course: Flows across the Rewa Plateau and northward into Uttar Pradesh.
Confluence: Joins the Ganga near Sirsa, Prayagraj district, downstream of the Ganga–Yamuna Sangam.
River chain: Tons → Ganga → Bay of Bengal; it does NOT join the Yamuna.
Length — caution: Published figures differ (often around 264 or 320 km). Do not learn one number as undisputed without naming the source.
Basin area — caution: A Ganga cultural-documentation report cites about 17,617 sq. km (11,974 in MP + 5,643 in UP); other published estimates differ.
Important distinction: Do not confuse this Tons/Tamas with the Himalayan Tons, which joins the Yamuna near the Uttarakhand–Himachal region.
Additional namesake: The Ayodhya–Ambedkar Nagar–Azamgarh Tamsa/Marha/Tons, documented by the National Institute of Hydrology, is a separate upper-Ganga-plain watercourse. Avoid merging its Ramayana associations with the Maihar–Rewa river.
03. Tributary network and riverbank geography
Main tributaries: Satna, Beehar/Bihad, Mahana and Belan; regional studies additionally discuss Kariyari and Magardaha.
Satna and Aman: The Satna River joins the Tons in the upper basin; Aman is recorded as a tributary of Satna in the Satna District Survey Report.
Beehar & Bichhiya: The Bichhiya River passes through Rewa and merges into the Beehar; the combined flow continues to the Tons.
Mahana: A tributary draining the Rewa escarpment; forms the Keoti Falls before continuing towards Tons.
Belan: A major tributary draining the northern Vindhyas; joins the Tons around Garkata–Gaughat / Chakghat near the Madhya Pradesh–Uttar Pradesh border (local place-name descriptions vary).
Sellar: Tributary of Beehar according to the Rewa and Mauganj district official pages; associated with Bahuti Falls.
Odda and Belah: The Uttar Pradesh Flood Hazard Atlas separately describes Odda Falls (~145 m) on the Odda–Belah system. This is NOT sufficient evidence that Odda Falls and Bahuti Falls are the same waterfall.
04. Four spectacular waterfalls — one-line map
Purwa Falls: On MAIN Tons River, Rewa district; approximately 67 m according to the district administration; other sources round to ~70 m.
Keoti Falls: On MAHANA River, Rewa region; often reported ~98 m.
Chachai Falls: On BIHAD / BEEHAR River, near Rewa; district administration reports MORE THAN 130 m; some reference books quote ~127 m.
Bahuti Falls: On SELLAR stream in present Mauganj district; 198 m and identified by the district administration as the tallest waterfall in Madhya Pradesh.
Geomorphology: Waterfalls form at sudden slope breaks (knickpoints) where streams descend from the Rewa/Vindhyan escarpment.
Seasonal flow: Monsoon brings strong discharge. Water diversion for irrigation/hydropower has greatly reduced visible flow at Chachai in many seasons.
05. Mahana River — Keoti waterfall and gorge
River system: Mahana → Tons → Ganga.
Terrain: Flows across upland terrain and drops abruptly at the Rewa Plateau escarpment.
Keoti Falls: Rewa district; approximately 98 m in commonly used geographical references.
Landscape: A narrow rocky gorge and steep cliff reflect river incision and slope breaks.
Exam comparison: Keoti is NOT on main Tons; Purwa is on main Tons.
06. Bihad / Beehar River — Rewa city and Chachai
Alternate spellings: Bihad, Beehar, Bihar / Behar (river name, not the state of Bihar).
Regional course: Drains Kaimur–Rewa uplands and flows near Rewa city.
Bichhiya: Important urban tributary; the MP Biodiversity Board report describes Bichhiya meeting Beehar, after which the river flows north to Tons.
Chachai: Major fall on Beehar; river-diversion structures serve irrigation and hydropower, which limits waterfall discharge outside high-flow periods.
Sellar tributary: The Bahuti waterfall is on Sellar, which joins Beehar according to Rewa and Mauganj district portals.
Rewa city: Beehar and Bichhiya are city-associated streams; do not describe the main Tons river as flowing through the city centre.
07. Bahuti Falls — highest in Madhya Pradesh
Height: 198 m according to Rewa and Mauganj district administration.
Present district: Mauganj (a newer district carved out of Rewa); older resources list Rewa.
River: Sellar stream → Beehar/Bihad → Tons → Ganga, according to government district portals.
Geographical process: Described as a knickpoint formed by river rejuvenation at the plateau edge.
Exam caution: Do not equate Bahuti Falls (Sellar, 198 m; Mauganj district portal) with the separately documented Odda Falls (~145 m; UP Flood Hazard Atlas). Local tributary descriptions and naming require source checking.
08. Belan River — source and course
Source region: University archaeological material places the headwaters in the Bijaigarh uplands east of Robertsganj, Sonbhadra (UP); some hydrological studies instead describe upper Kaimur streams in MP. Treat the precise origin as source-sensitive.
Course: Mainly westward through the northern Vindhyan belt of Sonbhadra–Mirzapur and around the UP–MP border towards Chakghat. The Belan valley also extends into adjoining Rewa-side terrain.
Confluence: Belan meets Tons near Garkata–Gaughat / Chakghat (Tonki area), close to the UP–MP border; Tons later enters the Ganga near Sirsa.
Belan tributaries: Adwa, Seoti, Tundiari, Lohanda Nala, Gorma and Naina are listed in university archaeological material for the wider Belan valley.
Physical setting: Belan valley cuts Vindhyan quartzites, with ancient river terraces and alluvial deposits.
Economic importance: Alluvial stretches have supported cultivation and settlement across prehistoric and later periods.
High-yield theme: Belan = one of the most important prehistoric archaeological landscapes of Uttar Pradesh.
09. Belan Valley archaeology — Chopani Mando
Location: Belan valley, Prayagraj district (older texts: Allahabad), on an ancient Belan channel.
Culture: Sequence from late Palaeolithic/Epipalaeolithic into Mesolithic and proto-Neolithic traditions.
Excavations: Associated with G. R. Sharma and the University of Allahabad excavations.
Early archaeological exploration: A. C. L. Carlleyle identified Mesolithic remains in the wider Belan valley during 1867–68; this predates the later excavations at Chopani Mando.
Discoveries: Microliths, remains of circular/oval huts, hearths and handmade pottery in later levels.
Rice evidence: Remains of rice/rice husk have been reported; they do not by themselves establish that the rice was domesticated.
Exam cue: Chopani Mando → Mesolithic–proto-Neolithic settlement, huts and pottery.
10. Belan Valley archaeology — Koldihwa and Mahagara
Koldihwa: Neolithic settlement in the Belan valley; well known for reported rice remains, stone tools, pottery and later Chalcolithic/Iron Age occupations.
Date caution: Old literature cites very early rice dates (sometimes 7th millennium BCE), but modern reassessments question the stratigraphic association and early domestication claims.
Mahagara: Neolithic settlement; excavations revealed circular huts/settlement remains and a distinctive cattle pen.
Evidence: Neolithic agriculture, cattle management and village life are key archaeological themes of the valley.
Exam pairing: Koldihwa → rice-remain discussion; Mahagara → cattle pen; Chopani Mando → early huts/microliths.
Scientific caution: Do not label Koldihwa the conclusively earliest domesticated-rice site of India.
11. History, economy and ecology of the basin
Baghelkhand and Rewa: The streams drain parts of the historical Baghelkhand region; Rewa city lies on Beehar–Bichhiya waterways.
Historic landscape: The Vindhyan uplands and Belan terraces document a long span of human settlement and movement from prehistory onwards.
Irrigation & power: Beehar diversion and local reservoirs support irrigation and energy generation; avoid confusing these with the Son River's Bansagar Dam.
Biodiversity: An MP Biodiversity Board-backed Rewa study examined fish diversity of the Tons and Beehar waterways; river fragmentation and pollution affect river habitats.
Environment: Monsoon seasonality, sediment dynamics, falling groundwater and local river diversions influence streamflow.
Tourism: Purwa, Keoti, Chachai and Bahuti are the principal scenic stops associated with this system.
12. Exam cautions + 30-second revision
Two Tons rivers: Ganga-bound Central Indian Tons/Tamas ≠ Himalayan Yamuna-bound Tons.
Third namesake warning: The Ayodhya-region Tamsa/Marha is also separately documented. Do not automatically attribute the Ramayana episode near Ayodhya to the Rewa/Maihar river.
Four falls: Purwa–Tons; Keoti–Mahana; Chachai–Beehar; Bahuti–Sellar.
Highest waterfall of MP: Bahuti, 198 m, according to Mauganj district administration.
Capital city trap: Beehar/Bichhiya pass near Rewa city; do not confuse Beehar with Bihar state.
Archaeological triad: Chopani Mando–early huts/microliths; Koldihwa–rice remains; Mahagara–cattle pen.
Origin/confluence: Tamasa Kund (present Maihar area) → Tons → Ganga near Sirsa; Belan → Tons around Chakghat / Garkata–Gaughat.
Publication caution: Older district names, waterfall heights, Odda vs Bahuti, and the precise upper Belan source differ between documents; label the source instead of mixing facts.
Key memory line: Tons–Purwa | Mahana–Keoti | Beehar–Chachai | Sellar–Bahuti | Belan–Koldihwa–Mahagara–Chopani Mando
Editorial note: Official district sites, an MP Biodiversity Board report, and peer-reviewed archaeological studies were checked. Where publications disagree, figures are deliberately qualified. Photo licences and credit links are supplied with every image.
